Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken (rotisserie chicken works beautifully)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (full-fat recommended)
  • 1/2 cup Buffalo hot sauce (Frank’s RedHot Original recommended)
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing (or blue cheese dressing)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup crumbled blue cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 large round sourdough or artisan bread loaf (810 inches in diameter)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (for butter mixture)
  • Fresh parsley or chives, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  2. Prepare the bread bowl: Using a serrated knife, cut a circle about 2 inches from the edge of the top of the bread loaf. Remove the top piece and set it aside. Gently pull out the soft bread from the inside, leaving a 1-inch thick wall. Reserve the pulled-out bread pieces for dipping.
  3. Brush the bread with butter: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. Brush the inside of the bread bowl generously with the butter mixture, then brush the outside and the lid.
  4. Make the dip filling: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the softened cream cheese and stir until smooth. Pour in the Buffalo hot sauce and ranch dressing, and stir until fully combined.
  5. Add the chicken and cheese: Stir in the shredded chicken, 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, mozzarella, and crumbled blue cheese (if using). Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir until melted and well incorporated.
  6. Stuff the bread bowl: Spoon the hot dip into the hollowed-out bread bowl, packing gently. Leave about 1/2 inch of space at the top.
  7. Top with cheese: Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese evenly over the dip.
  8. Bake: Place the stuffed bread bowl on the prepared baking sheet. Put the bread lid on the sheet next to it. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the bread is golden brown.
  9. Rest and garnish: Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh parsley or chives.
  10. Serve immediately: Place the bread bowl on a platter. Surround with reserved bread pieces, crackers, chips, or celery sticks. Tear off the lid and break into pieces.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature cream cheese to avoid lumps. Brush the inside of the bread bowl with butter to prevent sogginess. Shred your own cheese for smoother melting. The dip can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator; add 5-10 minutes to baking time if starting cold.
