This quick and easy Halloween trail mix is a happy accident that became a go-to snack. It combines salty pretzels, crunchy peanuts, sweet candy corn, and rich chocolate chips for an irresistible sweet and salty treat that comes together in under 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup candy corn
  • 1 cup mini pretzels
  • 1 cup roasted salted peanuts
  • 1/2 cup honey roasted peanuts
  • 1 cup Chex cereal (Rice or Corn)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (milk or semi-sweet)
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds (pepitas), optional
  • 1/2 cup M&M’s (Halloween colors), optional
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries, optional

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients: If your pretzels are large, break them into smaller pieces. Measure out all ingredients and have them within reach.
  2. Combine the base ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the candy corn, mini pretzels, roasted salted peanuts, honey roasted peanuts, and Chex cereal. Gently stir with a wooden spoon or spatula to distribute evenly. Avoid stirring too vigorously to prevent crushing the pretzels and cereal.
  3. Add the mix-ins: Add the chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds (if using), M&M’s (if using), and dried cranberries (if using). Stir gently again until everything is evenly distributed.
  4. Taste and adjust: Grab a small handful and taste it. Adjust the ratios to your liking, adding more candy corn, pretzels, or chocolate as desired.
  5. Transfer to storage container: Once you’re happy with the balance, transfer the trail mix to an airtight container or resealable bag. If serving immediately, you can leave it in the bowl.
  6. Let it rest (optional but recommended): Let the trail mix sit for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the candy corn to soften slightly.

Notes

Use fresh candy corn for the best texture. For extra flavor, toast the peanuts in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes and let cool before adding. The trail mix actually tastes better after a day or two as the flavors meld. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pretzels and certified gluten-free Chex cereal. For a nut-free version, swap peanuts for roasted chickpeas or sunflower seeds.
