A fresh, colorful, and visually stunning butter board featuring European-style butter, fresh herbs, and edible flowers, perfect for summer entertaining and easy to prepare in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted European-style butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil, torn
  • A handful of edible flowers (nasturtiums, pansies, calendula petals, or borage flowers), organic and pesticide-free
  • 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest
  • 1 tsp honey (optional)
  • Flaky sea salt, to sprinkle on top
  • A pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • Crusty bread or crackers, for serving

Instructions

  1. Soften the butter by leaving it out at room temperature for about 30 minutes until spreadable but not melting (about 68-77°F). Alternatively, microwave in 5-second bursts carefully.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the softened butter with lemon zest and honey (if using). Stir gently until evenly incorporated.
  3. Finely chop the chives, parsley, thyme leaves, and tear the basil using herb scissors or a sharp knife.
  4. Place your serving board or platter on a stable surface. Spread the flavored butter thickly and unevenly (about 1/2 inch thick) using a butter knife or offset spatula.
  5. Sprinkle the chopped herbs evenly across the butter, then gently nestle the edible flowers on top for a bright, natural look.
  6. Finish with a generous sprinkle of flaky sea salt and a pinch of freshly ground black pepper.
  7. Serve the board with crusty bread or crackers alongside. Encourage guests to scoop up the butter with their bread.

Notes

Use high-quality European-style butter for best creaminess. For vegan version, substitute butter with plant-based spread and honey with maple syrup or agave nectar. Add edible flowers just before serving to maintain visual appeal. Keep butter at room temperature for spreadability but refrigerate if left out over 30 minutes in warm weather.
