A quick and easy grilled cheese sandwich made in the air fryer without butter, delivering a perfectly crispy crust and melty cheese inside with less fat and mess.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices sturdy bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or white sandwich bread)
  • 2 ounces (60 grams) sharp cheddar cheese (or mozzarella, provolone, or cheese blend)
  • Olive oil or avocado oil spray
  • Optional: pinch of garlic powder, smoked paprika, or dried herbs like oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C) and let it warm up for about 3 minutes.
  2. Lay out two slices of bread on a clean surface. Spray one side of each slice lightly with olive oil spray; this will be the outside of the sandwich.
  3. Place slices of cheese on the un-oiled side of one bread slice, using about 2 ounces (60 grams) of cheese per sandwich.
  4. Optionally sprinkle a pinch of garlic powder or dried herbs over the cheese.
  5. Top with the second slice of bread, oiled side facing out. Press gently to seal.
  6. Place the sandwich in the air fryer basket. Cook for 4 minutes, then carefully flip using tongs or a spatula.
  7. Cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and crisp, and the cheese is melted.
  8. Remove the sandwich carefully, let it rest for a minute, then slice diagonally and serve.

Notes

Use a light spray of oil on the bread’s outside to achieve crispiness without butter. Choose sturdy bread to avoid dryness or burning. Flip the sandwich halfway through cooking for even crispness. Avoid overfilling to prevent sogginess. If your air fryer cooks unevenly, rotate the sandwich 180 degrees halfway through cooking.
