A quick and easy recipe for perfectly crispy air fryer french fries with a golden, crunchy exterior and fluffy interior. Made with simple ingredients and minimal oil, these fries are a healthier alternative to deep-fried versions.

  • 3 large russet potatoes (about 2 pounds / 900 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil or olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Optional: dried herbs like rosemary

Instructions

  1. Wash and peel the potatoes if desired, or leave skin on for a rustic touch.
  2. Cut the potatoes lengthwise into ¼-inch (about 6 mm) thick sticks, keeping them uniform.
  3. Soak the cut fries in cold water for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch. If short on time, soak for at least 15 minutes.
  4. Drain and pat the fries completely dry using paper towels or a clean kitchen towel.
  5. Toss the fries in a large mixing bowl with 2 tablespoons of oil, sea salt, black pepper, and any optional seasonings until lightly coated.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  7. Arrange the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket, avoiding overcrowding. Cook in batches if necessary.
  8. Cook for 15-18 minutes, shaking the basket or tossing fries gently every 5 minutes for even browning.
  9. Check for doneness; fries should be crisp on the outside and tender inside. Cook a few more minutes if needed, watching closely to prevent burning.
  10. Serve immediately with extra salt if desired and your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

Dry fries thoroughly after soaking to ensure crispiness. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket to prevent steaming. Shake the basket every 5 minutes for even cooking. Preheat the air fryer before cooking. For extra crispiness, try double air frying at different temperatures. Leftovers can be reheated in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes to restore crunch.
