Rich, fudgy chocolate crinkle cookies with a white chocolate spiderweb drizzle, perfect for Halloween. A happy accident turned into a must-make tradition.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (preferably pure)
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process recommended)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (good quality, like Ghirardelli or Guittard)
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening (optional, for thinning chocolate)
  • Small candy eyeballs (optional, for decoration)
  • Black gel food coloring (optional, for spider legs)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffyโ€”about 2-3 minutes with an electric mixer on medium speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and beat until fully combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix. The dough will be thick and slightly sticky.
  6. Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, portion out rounded tablespoons of dough (about 1.5 tablespoons each). Place them on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies will look puffed and slightly cracked on top. For softer cookies, bake for 10 minutes; for crisper edges, bake for 12.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Place the white chocolate chips and coconut oil (if using) in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth and fully melted.
  10. Transfer the melted white chocolate to a piping bag or a zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off. Working with one cookie at a time, pipe a spiral starting from the center and working outward.
  11. While the white chocolate is still wet, use a toothpick or skewer to drag lines from the center to the edges, creating a spiderweb effect.
  12. If desired, press two small candy eyeballs onto each cookie while the white chocolate is still tacky. Use a toothpick dipped in black gel food coloring to draw tiny spider legs.
  13. Allow the white chocolate to set completelyโ€”about 20-30 minutes at room temperature, or 10 minutes in the fridge.

Notes

Don’t overbakeโ€”cookies should look slightly underdone in the center when removed from the oven. Use room temperature ingredients for best results. For the spiderweb design, wipe the toothpick clean between each drag line to avoid muddying the pattern. Cookies taste even better the next day.
