Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground turkey (93/7 works great; drain any excess fat after browning)
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into ½-inch cubes (about 3 cups)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced (optional, for heat lovers)
  • 1 can (15 oz) fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian version)
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to your heat preference)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for serving)
  • Avocado, diced (for serving)
  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt (for serving)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for serving)
  • Lime wedges (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Brown the turkey: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink—about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Sauté the aromatics: Push the turkey to one side of the skillet and add a splash of olive oil. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and jalapeño (if using). Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the onion is translucent, then add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir together with the turkey.
  3. Layer the slow cooker: Transfer the turkey and vegetable mixture to a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the diced sweet potatoes, fire-roasted tomatoes, tomato sauce, drained beans, and chicken broth. Stir to combine.
  4. Add the spices: Sprinkle the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cinnamon, oregano, cayenne, salt, and pepper over the top. Stir again until evenly distributed.
  5. Slow cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender and the flavors have melded.
  6. Taste and adjust: Before serving, taste and add more salt, pepper, or cayenne if needed. Optionally, add a squeeze of lime juice to brighten the flavors.
  7. Serve and garnish: Ladle the chili into bowls and top with fresh cilantro, diced avocado, sour cream or Greek yogurt, shredded cheddar cheese, and a lime wedge.

Notes

For a thicker chili, let it cook uncovered for the last 30 minutes. This chili tastes even better the next day as the flavors meld. To freeze, cool completely and store in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months.
