Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 8 hot dogs or bratwursts
  • 8 hamburger buns and hot dog rolls
  • 8 cheddar cheese slices
  • Yellow mustard, ketchup, and mayonnaise
  • Pickles, sliced tomatoes, and lettuce leaves
  • 2 pounds small red potatoes
  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (Dukeโ€™s or Hellmannโ€™s recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 4 ears fresh corn on the cob, husked
  • Butter, unsalted and softened
  • Fresh strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Angel food cake or pound cake, cubed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potato salad: Wash and cut red potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Place in a large pot, cover with cold water, add a pinch of salt, bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain and let cool slightly.
  2. Mix the dressing: In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  3. Chop veggies: Finely dice celery stalks and red onion. Fold into the cooled potatoes with the dressing. Chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour to let flavors meld.
  4. Prepare the coleslaw: In a large bowl, toss shredded green cabbage and carrots. Whisk together mayonnaise, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and salt. Pour over cabbage mixture and toss well. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  5. Prep the grill: Light your grill and preheat to medium-high heat (about 375ยฐF/190ยฐC). Clean grates and oil lightly to prevent sticking.
  6. Grill the corn: Husk ears of corn and brush with softened butter. Place directly on the grill, turning every 5 minutes for about 15-20 minutes until tender and charred in spots.
  7. Form burger patties: Divide ground beef into 8 equal portions. Shape into patties about 3/4 inch thick, making a slight indentation in the center to prevent puffing. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  8. Grill burgers and hot dogs: Place patties on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add cheese slices in the last minute. Grill hot dogs alongside, turning frequently until nicely browned and heated through.
  9. Toast buns: Place burger buns and hot dog rolls cut side down on the grill for 1-2 minutes until lightly toasted but not burnt.
  10. Assemble and serve: Let guests build their own burgers and hot dogs with desired toppings. Serve sides cold and corn hot off the grill.
  11. Prepare dessert: Whip heavy cream with sugar until soft peaks form. Layer cubed angel food cake with mixed fresh berries and whipped cream in a trifle bowl or individual cups.

Notes

Do not press down on burgers while grilling to keep them juicy. Make a thumbprint indentation in patties to prevent puffing. Toast buns last minute to avoid sogginess. Potato salad and coleslaw taste better after chilling for a few hours or overnight. Use indirect heat for thicker items like corn to avoid burning.
