This spiced eggnog with bourbon is rich, creamy, and has a deep, aromatic warmth from allspice. It’s a crowd-pleasing holiday cocktail that comes together in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large egg yolks (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup bourbon
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons dark rum
  • Freshly grated nutmeg (for garnish)
  • Cinnamon sticks (for garnish)
  • Whipped cream (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the 4 egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar until pale yellow and slightly thickened, about 2 minutes.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups whole milk and 1 cup heavy cream. Heat over medium heat until steaming but not boiling, about 4-5 minutes.
  3. Slowly pour about 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture while whisking constantly to temper the eggs. Then slowly pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk, whisking continuously.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon allspice, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, pinch of salt, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  6. Optional: Pour the eggnog through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher or serving bowl for a smoother texture.
  7. Stir in 1/2 cup bourbon (and optional 2 tablespoons dark rum). Adjust spices or alcohol to taste.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
  9. Serve chilled in mugs. Top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg, and a cinnamon stick.

Notes

Temper eggs slowly to avoid curdling. For best flavor, chill overnight. Can be made dairy-free with oat milk and coconut cream. Non-alcoholic version: omit bourbon and rum.
