Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) hot water
  • 1 cup (2 sticks or 226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 3 cups (360g) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup white frosting (for decoration)
  • Green food coloring (a few drops)
  • Chocolate candies (for footballs)
  • White candy melts (for goal posts)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan thoroughly with butter or non-stick spray. For extra insurance, line the bottom with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 cups granulated sugar, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda, and 1 teaspoon salt until evenly combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup buttermilk, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, 2 large eggs, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are fine.
  5. Slowly pour in 1 cup of hot water while mixing on low speed. The batter will be very thin.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached.
  7. Let the cake cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto the rack to cool completely (at least 1-2 hours).
  8. While the cake cools, make the frosting: In a large bowl, beat 1 cup softened butter until creamy, about 2 minutes. Sift in 3/4 cup cocoa powder and beat until combined. Gradually add 3 cups sifted powdered sugar, alternating with 1/4 cup heavy cream. Beat in 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Adjust consistency with more cream or powdered sugar as needed.
  9. Divide the frosting into two portions. Tint the larger portion with green food coloring. Leave the smaller portion white for yard lines.
  10. Once the cake is completely cool, spread the green frosting evenly over the top using an offset spatula.
  11. Using the white frosting, pipe yard lines every 1.5 inches across the width of the cake. Mark the 50-yard line in the center. Add small white hash marks on each side. For goal posts, use white candy melts or pipe white frosting into a ‘U’ shape at each end.
  12. Place mini chocolate candies or chocolate chips on the field to represent footballs.
  13. Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving to set the frosting. Let sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Room temperature ingredients are key for best texture. Do not overmix the batter. The hot water helps bloom the cocoa for deeper flavor. Cool cake completely before frosting to prevent melting. For clean slices, use a sharp knife dipped in hot water and wipe between cuts.
